Muyuna Lodge

Muyuna Lodge is located 140 kilometers from Iquitos, up the Amazon River. This is a small rainforest lodge, secluded, intimate, that GUARANTEES the observation of monkeys, birds, sloths, pink dolphins, fish, caimans, etc., in their own habitat.

The bungalows are comfortable. They have en suite bathrooms and terraces facing the river. As the lodge is small, the personalized service quality is comparable with luxury hotels, always maintaining respect to the environment.

Muyuna maintains a tight relationship with San Juan de Yanayacu village, which benefits from ecotourism in the zone.

Facilities

Muyuna Lodge is not a Resort. The bungalows are basic, but comfortable and clean. There are no electricity, no internet, no cell signal, no newspapers. What we try to do is to preserve the natural environment.

The bungalows are fresh and are hermetically protected-mesh screens on the windows and roof, but maintain the privacy.

Distribution is done according to what the customer needs (single bungalows, double or matrimonial bungalows, family bungalows, etc.). In addition, each cottage has a full ensuite and modern bathroom.

All rooms have a terrace with hammock overlooking the forest or the river where you can see, for example, dolphins swimming in flood season. You can be pleased by colorful sunsets and by the deafening silence of the rainforest at night.

The lamps give a magical touch to the tropical night, as there is no electricity in the lodge. The hallways are also lit.

Due to the low population density in the area, there are no antennas, therefore, no cell signals.

We are in constant communication with Iquitos office by radio. In the afternoon, using a small generator, we can charge the batteries of cameras and lap tops.

The excursions that can be made in Muyuna are:

Walk to learn about medicinal plants and their uses.
Walk to look for monkeys, sloths, mammals, etc. in its own natural habitat.
Nocturnal hikes to look for nocturnal animals (alligators, toads, frogs, insects, snakes, spiders and fireflies). Rather do it by boat or canoe, for as close to Muyuna are many animals, it is safer to it do on the water.
Visit the community of San Juan de Yanayacu.
Canoe trips along the tributaries and ten lakes near Muyuna.
Piranha fishing in rivers and lakes.
Tour in the early morning to watch birds.
Swim with the gray and pink dolphins in the Amazon River and lakes.
Breakfast on the boat to enjoy the sunrise watching the dolphins jumping around.
Camping in virgin jungle.
Visit to the beaches and islands of the Amazon in the dry season.
See the Victoria Regia, the biggest aquatic plant in the world.
Find the prehistoric bird “shansho.”
Find the Crax globulosa (wattled curassow), a bird thought to be extinct and the only place in America you can see it is at Muyuna!!

Transfer from the airport arrivals lounge to Iquitos (or hotel or the office) for shopping and last-minute coordination.

Transfer to the port.

Transfer in a fast boat for 3 hours, 140 kms. upriver from Iquitos, on the Amazon River.

Distribution of bungalow and guidance. Delivery of list of animals that have been previously seen in the area.

Lunch buffet.

Boat trip to lake Sapote watching different birds, like parrots, jacanas, kingfishers, herons, panguanas, partridges, pigeons, cormorants, horned screamers, and then move to the other end of the Lake Moena where you can see also sloths and monkeys, as the night monkey, squirrel and dusky titi monkeys, and many other species.

After watching a sunset over the forest of mirrors, back to Muyuna.

Dinner buffet.

In the evening, boat ride to see caimans, nocturnal birds and mammals.

Breakfast buffet very early. Leoncito Hike, where you appreciate the immense variety of flora around the Muyuna area. At this walk you can taste the water that Uncaria tomentosa (cat’s claw) has within its vines – some say it can cure cancer and AIDS. You also be amazed at how huge the ceiba tree is. In addition, you will see the world’s smallest monkey, the pigmy marmoset, and the squirrel and tamarin monkeys. If you’re lucky, you’ll see the howler monkey, whose deafening roar can be heard many miles away.

Lunch buffet.

Boat trip to the Lakes Purura and Corrientes and catch different kind of fishes, including the famous piranha. This is an area that has many strangler vines, being the favorite spot of the bird “hoatzin” or shansho. This colorful bird looks like a prehistoric bird because it has three claws on the middle joint of the wing

Dinner buffet.

At night, you take a night walk in search of huge frogs, anaconda’s favorite food. In addition to seeing tarantulas, it is worth clarifying that despite the bad reputation, they are not dangerous to humans.

Breakfast buffet very early. Boat trip to Lagoon Casha, lagoon not easily accessible. Here you will row or walk depending on the level of the river, looking at different species of birds and monkeys.

Lunch buffet.

Excursion by boat to the lake Juanachi, where we use canoes. In this place, you’ll see birds and animals more closely. Using the boats will return to the Muyuna.

At night canoe trip in search of caimans, nocturnal birds and mammals.

The tours are from here on different from the others, because you will camp very deep in the jungle. We’ll take you to the lake Tipashiro or Boca Bufeo or Alto Purura (depending on the level of the river), where we will establish a base camp to plan the different excursions. Here we serve lunch, dinner and breakfast and you can enjoy the pure and virgin Amazon jungle site where we guarantee you’ll see countless species of animals.

The next day, after breakfast, return to the lodge for a well deserved lunch.

Share your afternoon with friendly people of the jungle, in the village San Juan de Yanayacu. The visit is very spontaneous; travelers sometimes play football with them or just walk around the village. You can buy handicrafts that they make themselves based on seeds and vegetable ivory.

At night, take a nocturnal excursion in search of huge frogs, anaconda’s favorite food.

Breakfast on the boat. Using small boats will take you to the Amazon River, where you will experience the most magical moment of your trip, which is to watch and swim with pink dolphins playing around your boat. On the way back to the lodge, you will see the biggest aquatic plant in the world, the famous Victoria Regia. It is also easy to see iguanas.

Your experience of the jungle comes to an end and you will sail three hours back to Iquitos and take you to the hotel or airport.
