Zafiro Cruise

The Zafiro Experience: 4-Day High River Season

This four-day expedition aboard the Zafiro explores the flooded rainforest landscapes of northern Peru during the high-water season. Beginning in Iquitos, the voyage travels along the Ucayali, Marañón, and Amazon rivers while venturing into secluded tributaries around the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Guided skiff outings allow guests to observe remarkable biodiversity, including pink river dolphins, colorful birdlife, monkeys, and nocturnal animals. Encounters with local Amazonian communities and engaging onboard activities enhance the journey, creating a brief yet deeply immersive experience within one of the planet’s most extraordinary ecosystems.

After arriving at the airport, travelers embark on a scenic overland transfer to Nauta, where the Zafiro river vessel awaits. Once onboard, the crew welcomes guests and guides them to their suites, whose large windows offer beautiful views of the surrounding Amazon scenery.
Before departure, guests gather for a welcome cocktail prepared with fresh Amazonian fruits while enjoying panoramic views from the observation deck or lounge. The naturalist guides then introduce the expedition, outlining the river systems, wildlife, and ecosystems that will be encountered throughout the journey.
Later in the afternoon, the first skiff excursion explores the Yacapana area. This region of flooded forests and narrow waterways provides ideal habitat for birds, reptiles, and mammals. As night approaches, guests head out for a guided nocturnal safari. Using spotlights, guides search for caimans along the riverbanks while pointing out frogs, insects, and other nighttime creatures. The day ends with a welcome dinner featuring regional Peruvian and Amazonian flavors.

The day begins early with a sunrise skiff excursion to the Yanallpa region along the Ucayali River, located within the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Early morning offers excellent wildlife viewing opportunities, and the flooded forest allows skiffs to glide between trees for an up-close perspective of the Amazon ecosystem.
Following breakfast onboard, exploration continues with another outing along the Tapiche River. Its tranquil channels provide ideal conditions for spotting wildlife while guides explain the delicate ecological balance of the rainforest and the conservation efforts that help protect it.
Back on the ship, guests enjoy a cooking demonstration where the chef presents traditional Peruvian cooking methods and ingredients commonly used in Amazonian cuisine. In the afternoon, a skiff excursion to the Dorado River introduces travelers to traditional fishing techniques practiced by local communities. As evening arrives, another nighttime wildlife search reveals the rainforest’s active nocturnal species before returning to the vessel for dinner and relaxation.

After breakfast, the day’s adventure begins with a visit to the Yarapa River, a dark-water tributary known for frequent sightings of pink and gray Amazon river dolphins.
Later, the Zafiro continues navigating toward the impressive meeting point of the Ucayali and Marañón rivers. This dramatic confluence marks the official beginning of the Amazon River and is one of the highlights of the voyage.
In the afternoon, a skiff excursion along the Amazon River offers insight into everyday life along the riverbanks. Guests visit a small riverside community where residents share aspects of their traditions, culture, and connection with the rainforest. Before returning to the ship, travelers may enjoy a beautiful Amazon sunset. The evening concludes with music, a farewell gathering with the crew, and a memorable dinner onboard.

The final morning begins with breakfast onboard as the Zafiro approaches the port for disembarkation. On the way, guests visit the Manatee Rescue Center, a conservation facility dedicated to protecting one of the Amazon’s most vulnerable species.
At the center, biologists and volunteers care for rescued Amazonian manatees that have been orphaned or injured. Visitors learn about the rehabilitation process and the work involved in eventually releasing these gentle animals back into the wild. The center also provides educational insights about other Amazon wildlife and the environmental challenges facing the region.
This final visit provides a meaningful conclusion to the expedition, emphasizing the importance of conservation and the protection of Amazon biodiversity. Afterward, guests are transferred to the airport to continue their onward journey, departing with lasting memories of the rivers and rainforests of the Peruvian Amazon.
