Zafiro Cruise

The Zafiro Experience: 5-Day Low Water Season

Discover the soul of the Peruvian Amazon on a five-day adventure through the spectacular Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, often called the “Jungle of Mirrors.” During the low water season, receding river levels reveal more forest paths and hidden lagoons, allowing deeper exploration of this extraordinary ecosystem. Encounter remarkable wildlife, from pink river dolphins to giant water lilies, while connecting with local communities and learning about ancestral traditions and Amazonian worldviews. With guided excursions by skiff and canoe, this experience combines nature, culture, and breathtaking scenery in one of the planet’s most pristine environments.

Your journey begins in Iquitos with a scenic land transfer to the river port of Nauta. After enjoying a boxed lunch en route, board your vessel and settle in as it navigates the Marañón River. A welcome briefing outlines the wildlife, geography, and cultural heritage of the region.
After sunset, head out by skiff to Nauta Caño for your first Amazon adventure. As night falls, the rainforest comes alive. Guided by expert naturalists, search for caimans, frogs, tarantulas, and other nocturnal creatures. Return onboard for a thoughtfully prepared dinner featuring Peruvian and Amazonian flavors.

Greet the morning from the observation deck as birds and wildlife stir with the sunrise. Following breakfast, explore Yanayacu de Pucate—one of the most untouched areas within the reserve, where dark, mirror-like waters reflect the sky and jungle canopy. Depending on conditions, enjoy kayaking or even a refreshing swim.
Later, visit the San Regis community to experience daily Amazonian life. Through interpreters, learn about local traditions, spiritual beliefs, and ancestral practices shared by a community shaman. Participate in a symbolic tree-planting ceremony and browse handmade crafts created by local artisans. Return to the vessel for an evening of live music and dinner.

After breakfast, travel by skiff through interconnected lakes and lagoons, reaching tranquil Japanese Lagoon, an ideal location to spot pink river dolphins. Surrounded by unspoiled rainforest, enjoy a picnic-style outing while observing one of the reserve’s carefully protected habitats. Continue through nearby waterways where monkeys, exotic birds, and other wildlife are often seen.
In the afternoon, combine a rainforest walk with canoe exploration in the Amazon Natural Park. Experience close encounters with towering trees, colorful insects, and amphibians, while guides explain ecological balance and Amazonian philosophy. The day concludes with live music and a festive gala dinner onboard.

Begin the day with a guided walk in the Casual area, searching for vibrant poison dart frogs and other unique species. Admire massive “Avatar” trees and encounter the impressive Victoria Amazonica, the world’s largest aquatic plant. Low water conditions make forest trails more accessible, offering a deeper understanding of plant life and jungle ecology.
Later, cruise to the dramatic meeting point of the Ucayali and Marañón Rivers, the official birthplace of the Amazon River. This iconic confluence is also a prime location for spotting pink river dolphins. Learn about the geological and hydrological forces that shaped the Amazon Basin while enjoying panoramic river views.

Before breakfast, explore Nauta by motocar and visit its lively market, where locals sell fresh produce, fish, and regional specialties. This outing offers an authentic glimpse into everyday life in the Amazon.
After breakfast and disembarkation, travel toward Iquitos with a stop at the Amazon Forever Bio Park, also known as the Manatee Rescue Center. Discover how endangered manatees are rehabilitated and prepared for release, along with other rescued wildlife. Following this inspiring conservation visit, continue to the airport for departure.
