Zafiro Cruise

The Zafiro Experience: 8-Day Amazon Rainforest Expedition

Experience the remarkable biodiversity of the Peruvian Amazon on an eight-day journey aboard the Zafiro river cruise. Starting in Iquitos, this immersive expedition travels through the Amazon, Marañón, and Ucayali rivers and ventures into the heart of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, often referred to as the “Forest of Mirrors.”
Daily excursions by skiff and guided rainforest walks offer opportunities to observe a wide variety of wildlife, including pink river dolphins, colorful birds, amphibians, and nocturnal animals. Along the way, guests also gain insight into authentic Amazonian culture through visits to remote river communities. Activities such as kayaking, fishing, wildlife watching, and cultural encounters provide a deeper understanding of life in the world’s largest rainforest

Upon arrival at the airport, guests are welcomed and transferred to the DoubleTree by Hilton in Iquitos for lunch. Before boarding the cruise, a panoramic city tour introduces travelers to Iquitos and its unique development in the middle of the rainforest, highlighting its importance as a gateway to Amazon expeditions.
Later, guests proceed to the main dock to board the Zafiro river cruise. After settling into their suites, travelers can explore the ship’s observation decks and lounge areas while enjoying views of the surrounding jungle. Guides provide an orientation covering the region’s geography, ecosystems, and wildlife. As the ship begins its journey along the river, guests relax with a cocktail while watching the rainforest landscape pass by. The evening concludes with a welcome dinner featuring regional Peruvian cuisine as the vessel continues deeper into the Amazon basin.

The day begins with an early morning boat excursion along the Amazon River, when wildlife is most active. As mist lifts from the water, guides help identify birds, monkeys, and other animals along the riverbanks and forest canopy. This peaceful ride highlights the vast scale and biodiversity of the Amazon ecosystem.
After breakfast on board, the cruise continues toward the confluence of the Marañón and Ucayali rivers, the point where the Amazon River officially begins. This area is also known for sightings of pink and gray river dolphins.
Later, guests enjoy a guided walk near Puerto Prado where they encounter Amazonian plants, including the impressive Victoria Amazonica water lilies with their enormous floating leaves. After dinner, a nighttime excursion reveals the rainforest’s nocturnal life, including caimans, frogs, insects, and other creatures rarely seen during the day.

Today’s adventures lead deeper into the protected landscapes of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Traveling by skiff through narrow waterways, lagoons, and flooded forests allows guests to explore one of the most pristine parts of the Amazon.
The morning begins with a picnic breakfast near Japanese Lagoon, a remote area known for its calm waters and frequent dolphin sightings. Surrounded by untouched rainforest, this peaceful setting offers an immersive jungle experience.
Later in the day, guests may choose optional activities such as kayaking or swimming in the region’s dark, tannin-colored waters. These calm environments are ideal for observing wildlife and appreciating the dense rainforest vegetation.
In the afternoon, an excursion through Amazon Natural Park combines canoe rides with short rainforest walks. Guides explain the ecological relationships between plants, animals, and their environment while highlighting medicinal plants and hidden wildlife. The evening ends with an onboard cocktail demonstration and entertainment before dinner.

In the morning, guests visit the riverside community of San Regis for a cultural experience. Travelers learn about local traditions and how residents rely on fishing, farming, and forest resources for their livelihoods. Community members welcome visitors with a traditional ceremony led by a local shaman, sharing cultural and spiritual knowledge passed down through generations. Guests also plant a tree as a symbolic contribution to rainforest conservation.
A small artisan market offers handmade crafts created by women from the community, reflecting local culture and the Amazon’s natural environment.
Later, a skiff excursion to Shiriyacu Lake provides opportunities to observe birds and aquatic wildlife. Guests can also try traditional piranha fishing techniques with guidance from local experts. As sunset paints the sky over the river, travelers return to the ship for dinner and relaxation.

The day begins with a visit to Nauta, one of the oldest towns in the Peruvian Amazon and an important regional hub. Walking through the town offers a glimpse into everyday river life, from local markets to small shops selling produce and handcrafted goods.
After returning to the ship for breakfast, guests explore the Comunal Florida Reserve during a guided rainforest walk. This protected area is home to diverse wildlife and towering rainforest trees, including impressive mahogany specimens. Guides explain their ecological importance and the extraordinary biodiversity of the region.
In the afternoon, a skiff excursion explores waterways near Pahuachiro. These quiet channels provide excellent opportunities to observe birds, monkeys, and reptiles along the riverbanks. After a day of exploration, guests return to the ship for dinner.

The morning begins with a skiff excursion in the Yanallpa region of the Ucayali River. Navigating flooded forests and winding channels allows access to areas unreachable by larger vessels.
Later, the ship continues toward the Tapiche River, a remote waterway known for its biodiversity and peaceful scenery. Guests may spot colorful birds, sloths, and other animals in the forest canopy.
Back onboard, the chef hosts a Peruvian cooking demonstration highlighting regional ingredients and culinary traditions. In the afternoon, guests visit the Dorado River, where they can try traditional fishing while enjoying the rainforest surroundings. The day ends with another nighttime wildlife excursion.

After breakfast, the journey continues along the Yarapa River, a blackwater tributary surrounded by dense rainforest. This area is famous for frequent sightings of pink and gray river dolphins. Early morning excursions provide great opportunities to photograph wildlife and observe birds and monkeys beginning their daily routines.
The ship later passes the confluence of the Marañón and Ucayali rivers once again, highlighting the immense scale of the Amazon basin.
In the afternoon, skiff rides along the Amazon River offer glimpses of life in riverside communities where families live closely connected to the forest. As evening arrives, guests watch a spectacular Amazon sunset from the deck. The final night onboard features live music, a crew presentation, and a farewell dinner celebrating the journey.

After breakfast, guests disembark the ship and visit the Amazon Manatee Rescue Center before heading to the airport. This conservation facility rehabilitates endangered manatees and other rescued animals before releasing them back into the wild.
During the visit, biologists explain the threats facing Amazon wildlife and ongoing conservation efforts to protect these species and their habitats. Observing these gentle animals up close highlights the importance of preserving the rainforest.
After the visit, guests transfer to the airport, concluding an unforgettable exploration of the Peruvian Amazon and the remarkable landscapes of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.
