Zafiro Cruise

The Zafiro Experience: 8-Day Low Water Season

Discover one of the planet’s most biologically diverse environments on an 8-day Amazon River journey aboard the elegant Zafiro. This expedition travels along the Marañón, Ucayali, and Amazon Rivers within the vast Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. The experience blends wildlife observation, rainforest exploration, and meaningful interactions with local communities.
Each day includes guided excursions by skiff and on foot, allowing travelers to encounter pink river dolphins, colorful birds, and remarkable plant life while navigating the reflective waterways known as the “Forest of Mirrors.”

Guests are welcomed at the airport and transferred by private vehicle to the port of Nauta to board the vessel. A boxed lunch is provided during the journey. Once onboard, travelers settle into their suites and are greeted with a refreshing cocktail made from regional fruits and Peruvian pisco.
An introductory briefing by naturalist guides provides an overview of the upcoming expedition, including information about the geography, wildlife, and planned activities. This session helps guests better understand the Amazon ecosystem before exploration begins.
In the evening, the first excursion takes place with a skiff ride to Nauta Caño. At night, the rainforest reveals a different world of wildlife. Guides help locate caimans along the riverbanks while the sounds of frogs and insects fill the jungle. After the adventure, guests return to the ship for dinner and relaxation.

The day begins with birdwatching from the ship’s observation deck as the rainforest awakens. The region hosts numerous resident and migratory bird species, making it ideal for photography and wildlife observation.
Later, the journey continues by skiff into Yanayacu de Pucate, one of the most remote and pristine areas within the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.
Breakfast is served outdoors surrounded by the rainforest and tranquil blackwater channels. Guests can choose to kayak through the tributaries or swim in the dark waters, a unique Amazon experience. The calm surface reflects the surrounding forest, creating spectacular scenery.
In the afternoon, visitors travel to the community of San Regis to learn about local traditions, beliefs, and daily life in the Amazon. A symbolic tree-planting ceremony highlights conservation efforts, and guests can browse handcrafted items made by local women artisans. Back on board, there is time to relax and enjoy live music before dinner.

The expedition ventures deeper into the reserve by skiff to explore hidden lakes and lagoons. One highlight is Japanese Lagoon, known for frequent sightings of pink river dolphins that often surface close to the boats.
A picnic lunch is enjoyed in this protected natural setting surrounded by untouched rainforest. The exploration continues to the Yanayaquillo gorge, where narrow waterways and dense vegetation provide excellent opportunities to spot birds, monkeys, and reptiles.
Later, guests visit the Amazonian Natural Park for a guided rainforest walk followed by canoe exploration through flooded forest areas. In the evening, travelers gather onboard for a cultural activity featuring the preparation of traditional Peruvian cocktails before dinner.

The morning begins with a guided walk in the Casual area, a region known for its biodiversity. Along the trail, guides point out fascinating rainforest species such as poison dart frogs and towering trees sometimes referred to as “Avatar” trees because of their impressive size. Visitors may also see the giant floating leaves of the Victoria Amazonica water lily.
Back on the ship, the chef demonstrates how to prepare classic Peruvian dishes.
Later, the expedition travels by skiff to the point where the Marañón and Ucayali Rivers meet, forming the official start of the Amazon River. Pink river dolphins are frequently seen in this area. The day ends with scenic views as the ship continues its voyage.

Early in the morning, the vessel returns to Nauta, where guests visit the lively local market by motocar, a popular three-wheeled vehicle used in the region. The market offers insight into daily Amazon life, with vendors selling fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, and regional foods.
After returning to the ship, the journey continues to the Florida Reserve for a guided forest walk. This protected area hosts numerous birds, amphibians, and insects, while towering mahogany trees dominate the canopy. Guides explain the ecological importance of the rainforest and its complex ecosystems.
In the afternoon, guests explore the waterways of Pahuachiro by boat. As sunset approaches, golden reflections spread across the river, creating a peaceful moment to appreciate the vast Amazon landscape.

At sunrise, travelers observe daily life along the riverbanks as local residents begin their morning routines. Fishermen head out on the water while birds gather along the shoreline.
After breakfast, the expedition explores the Yarapa River by skiff. This blackwater river is known for its rich biodiversity and tranquil environment. Guides help identify monkeys, birds, reptiles, and other wildlife hidden within the forest.
Later, guests visit the community of Paranapura, where residents share stories about their traditions and way of life connected to the rainforest.
In the evening, another excursion focuses on nocturnal wildlife. Guides search for caimans, frogs, bats, and even tarantulas that emerge after dark. Before dinner, guests can enjoy live music performed by the onboard band.

The final full day begins with an early morning exploration of the Yarapa River, when wildlife activity is at its peak and birdlife is especially vibrant.
After breakfast, the expedition reaches the Yucuruchi area within the Pacaya Samiria Reserve. Guests embark on a guided jungle hike where naturalist guides explain the relationships between plants, animals, and the surrounding ecosystem. They also point out medicinal plants used by local communities.
After lunch and a short rest on the ship, the afternoon excursion explores the Amazon River in search of pink river dolphins and other wildlife. At sunset, vibrant colors fill the sky during the final evening of the journey. A farewell dinner and presentation from the crew celebrate the expedition.

After breakfast, guests disembark and visit the Amazon Forever Bio Park, also known as the Manatee Rescue Center. This conservation center rehabilitates orphaned and injured Amazonian manatees before releasing them back into the wild.
During the visit, guides explain the threats facing these gentle mammals and the conservation efforts underway to protect them. Visitors also learn about other rescued animals and environmental education programs.
After the visit, travelers are transferred to the airport for their onward flights, marking the end of an unforgettable Amazon adventure.
